(AD2014 Auckland Inter Churches Multicultural Choral Combined Service)
Praise God”, “Praise Him”,”Praise The Lord ““整篇每一句中都帶著[讚美]Praise The Lord兩字;原本 150的數目即是100+ 50的數目, 亦就是意涵着”滿足”又額外的恩典之意.

Prelude
前序
Speaking the name of Jesus Christ changes things. Once we proclaim the presence of the messiah in our midst things are not the same!
This is not just a proud evangelical assertion.
It names the reality that, in our quite properly secular society, the confident Christian cry that our lives are guided by a homeless Jew who died on a cross in Palestine 2,000 years ago will change the way people look at us. And not always in a good way.
Speaking the name of Jesus Christ changes things. It can make people uncomfortable. It can move others to scorn. It can be an embarrassment. And yet, it can also be an invitation.
It will define how we are seen. It will define people’s response to us. It can close doors. And yet it can open up new possibilities. It all depends on how that name is spoken.
Speaking the name of Jesus Christ changes things. If it doesn’t change things we have not spoken it well. Because the good news of Jesus Christ is precisely that things can be changed, that there is room for hope despite despair, that justice can prevail over evil, that love lies at the very heart of life.
The fact is that, for Christians, speaking the name of Jesus Christ creates the world we live in and can open the door to that life for others.
Theme
主題
Singing the Lord’s song, the Gospel of Jesus Christ, in this strange land is exactly the same. Our singing may, perhaps, be seen in 3 ways.
It is celebration. It is joy. It is festival.
To be honest, you wouldn’t always know that. Often our singing seems more duty than delight, more dirge than jamboree. We need to remember that we sing because we want to, because we are celebrating the presence of Immanuel, because we are en-joy-ing the hope we are offered. Singing the good news is a festive opportunity.
It is also worship. It is a chance to offer reverend thanks. It is an opportunity to acknowledge how fundamentally different our lives are when they are overwhelmed by the presence of God.
And singing hymns to our God is missional. At their best our hymns proclaim the ground of our hope, the meaning of justice, the depth of love. Certainly some hymns are better than others! But poetic expressions of faith, hope and love coupled with inspired melody, harmony and rhythm ought to constitute an invitation to join our festival and share the life it celebrates.
Of course our song is not always missional. Sometimes it is a barrier. It all depends on the songs and the singing.
Singing Invitation
Make no mistake then, your calling as singers is a critical vocation. This missional voice we have been given is an awesome responsibility.
My challenge to you then today is a simple one, “Is your singing invitational, and how can you make it more invitational?”
Does it bid people to taste and see that the Lord is good? Does hearing your singing, your song, make people want to hear more? Or do they find it, as they may find some other aspects of the Church’s evangelical work, embarrassing, even scornful?
Does your singing facilitate festival and faith? Or is it so patterned by the culture of a church from another time that it cannot connect with people who have no experience of church and no way of understanding our language?
Our task as missional singers is to sing a vision of a world that is both true to our faith and attractive to our listeners.
In Genesis 1 God speaks the world into existence. Our challenge is to do the same – to sing this same Word, the gospel of Jesus Christ, in such a way that we, too, conjure a world into existence, a world that provides a home for people who seek hope, and justice and love.
Our song must be an invitation, drawing our sisters and brothers in, daring them to share this new world. It must be an invitation they can hear and understand.
So, I want you to think of the choir as an arm of the missional church. And, like the church, we can exercise our mission badly, or we can exercise it well.
As a choir, and as a church, we can portray ourselves as an exclusive elite. We can insist that ours is the only was to sing, our songs the only songs; that to be embraced by God and to enjoy the good news others must become like us. But this smug elitism does a disservice to the gospel. Because if we have learned anything from the scriptures, surely we have learned that the songs of God are sung in all tongues and by all cultures.
Or, as a choir, we can sound like a broken record, locked into a by-gone world, unable to make Christian faith fresh and contemporary. Then we have become an anachronism, yesterday’s church. This doesn’t mean the songs of the past have no place. On the contrary, many are cherished expressions of faith. But they must be sung in a way that brings them to life for people who have never heard them before.
Ultimately our mission is one of invitation, welcome into the enjoyment of the love of God. We know welcome when we experience it. Even when the one welcoming us comes from a different culture and speaks a different language, the warmth of their engagement assures us that we are safe, respected, embraced.
As a pakeha with little Maori language, when I have been on a marae I have known this welcome. I hope you have known it too. In the same way, when people who have no experience of Church come into contact with us, they need to experience the warmth of this kind of invitation, not arrogance, irrelevance or hostility.
Coda
結語
Does our singing issue this kind of invitation? Or are we only singing to ourselves?
I am confident we are not. I am confident your song is pitched into the world as celebration, as worship, as a song of mission, charming and challenging, engaging and inviting, seeking to transform listeners into singers.
So sing proudly – for you are ambassadors of the good news. You are bearers of hope. You have the chance to inspire your listeners with a vision of new life.
Sing harmony - rich with diversity, an image of the church that draws all cultures together in a celebration of life.
Sing joyfully - for the good news you announce is nothing less than the realisation of hope, the proclamation of justice for the oppressed, God’s New World where chaos is banished by love.
Sing with passion – for the good news you are singing is life itself, and life is a celebration of humanity as we have seen it lived in the life of Jesus, the messiah.
Sing openly – for our choir always has room for new members, not for the sake of the choir, but for the sake of the song we sing together which echoes throughout time and throughout the universe
Sing invitation – and transform listeners into singers who in turn will become ambassadors of the good news, witnesses to God’s love, signs of hope, the very presence of Christ in this world.
So, now, join me in singing - He Came Singing Love, Faith, Hope, Peace
1 He came singing love and he lived singing love; he died singing love. He arose in silence.
For the love to go on we must make it our song: you and I be the singers.
2 He came singing faith and he lived singing faith; he died singing faith. He arose in silence.
For the faith to go on we must make it our song: you and I be the singers.
3 He came singing hope and he lived singing hope; he died singing hope. He arose in silence.
For the hope to go on we must make it our song: you and I be the singers.
4 He came singing peace and he lived singing peace; he died singing peace. He arose in silence.
For the peace to go on we must make it our song: you and I be the singers.
(the lyrics of "He Came Singing Love" by Colin Gibson)
